How To Prepare For Extreme Rock Climbing

Extreme rock climbing is carried out in harsh mountainous terrain, and is the ultimate test of the ability and endurance of a rock climber. It is not a discipline you can start with straight away, but one which will need months of preparation, depending on your current fitness levels and whether or not you have any climbing experience. If you are just beginning as a climber, you will also need to take enough instruction to get you up to the standard needed to tackle extreme climbs. As you progress, both with fitness and experience, you will find ever greater satisfaction from pushing yourself harder.

It is easier for a beginner to start rock climbing today than it has ever been before. It is an activity which is becoming increasingly popular, meaning that there is far more likely to be a training center with skilled staff somewhere near you. Trainers have become more advanced, and training materials have changed out of all recognition thanks to the popularity of online video. The biggest change, however, has come in the equipment, with modern materials providing the same degree of protection at a far lower weight.

It is possible, and indeed advisable, to learn the basics of climbing before you even approach a professional instructor. Make sure, though, that you have a complete collection of training materials as it is so easy to collect odd isolated videos from video sharing sites which leave out crucial details. Watching videos of competent climbers can also build your confidence, even though you are way behind them in fitness and ability. Once you have understood the basics of climbing, it is time to start by tackling indoor climbing walls.

By taking the time you need to properly develop your skills, you will also be leaving the necessary time for fitness work. Extreme rock climbing is, as it says, extreme, and there is no place for anyone who cannot cope with the endurance side of the sport. Putting in some serious aerobic fitness work will give your body the base of fitness from which to build up strength and endurance. It is so important to see health and fitness as a unified issue, and to work on the body as a whole rather than emphasizing one small part of it.

It may take some time to get ready for extreme rock climbing, but if it is something which excites you the wait will be worth it. If you go in knowing that you have put in the hard hours of practice, that alone will give you the confidence to get through the tough parts and succeed. Even when you are ready, don't take on too much too soon. Stay attached to a climbing school and keep looking to improve all the time. If you do, you can derive great satisfaction from extreme rock climbing.
